The Sutras

Essential Teachings of Buddhism

A sutra contains essential teachings of Buddhism. These sutras are writings that describe the teachings, discourses, and dialogues of Buddha Shakyamuni as well as other Buddhist masters. They serve as a guide for the spiritual practice of monks, nuns, and laypeople in the Zen tradition.

Certain sutras, such as the Heart Sutra, Hannya Shingyo, or the Diamond Sutra (Kongokyo), are considered foundational texts.

In the Zen tradition, meditation, zazen, is often regarded as the primary practice, and sutras are used to support this practice by providing guidance, encouragement, and teachings that allow for the deepening of this meditative experience. Ultimately, the goal of Zen practice is to realize awakening and full awareness in the present moment, with sutras serving as an essential tool to achieve this.
